Walking Info
This
information is primarily aimed at new walkers to the group
Meeting time and place
For all our weekend walks we meet at 9.00am at the 'Venture Wales'
car park opposite 'Tesco petrol station' in Aberdare
(unless otherwise stated in our programme), this allows us to car share to the
actual start point of the walk. If you wish to go directly to the
start point of any walk please contact the walk leader for details.
What to expect on our walks
Most of our walks go through fields, across hills and mountains,
which given our fair share of rain are often wet and muddy, so do come prepared! We do
our best to observe the Countryside Code, follow Public Rights of
Way and avoid all forms of trespass. The Walk Leader has control of
each walk and dictates the pace, he/she has the right to alter or
postpone the walk as deemed fit e.g. poor weather, ground conditions
etc. Our walks are categorised as easy = mostly flat, easy gradients
or slopes, moderate = which include a number of short climbs,
moderate+ = longer and steeper climbs, strenuous = more challenging,
often with stiff climbs over mountain terrain.
What do I need to
wear/bring on a walk?
Walking clothing/footwear is often a matter of personal choice,
however, we would suggest that the following are essential, sturdy
shoes or boots preferably of the waterproof variety i.e. gore tex and
similarly, a waterproof coat. A backpack or rucksack to hold any
additional clothing that you may not be wearing at the beginning of
the walk (most of our group use the layering system of clothing). We
would not recommend denim jeans, which may be hard wearing, but have
no thermal value and if they get wet they are most uncomfortable.
For our day walks we recommend bringing a packed lunch and flask,
along with enough water for the duration of the walk (this often
depends on the individual, the length of the walk and the time of
year).
Dogs
We allow well behaved, controlled dogs on our walks (except where
leaders indicate that they prefer not to have dogs on a particular
walk). However, dogs are the sole responsibility of their owners and
we request that dogs are kept on a lead in the vicinity of livestock
and that due consideration is given as to whether to bring a dog
during lambing time.
